Join the creator of Vera, Shetland and Two Rivers, TAF2023 International Writer in Residence Ann Cleeves, New Zealand’s Vanda Symon, and our own Garry Disher, David Owen, Sarah Barrie and a host of others for TAF2023 | TASSIE VICE.

TASSIE VICE - think 80s detective shows, the rise of the amateur sleuth, and How to Host a Murder dinners.

  • Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 October 2023 - Tassie Vice Panel Program. A two-day discussion of crime fiction from the 80s to today featuring more than 25 international, Australian and Tasmanian authors including Ann Cleeves, Garry Disher and Vanda Symon on both Saturday and Sunday of the panel program.

  • Thursday 26 October 2023 - Ann Cleeves Day. Ahead of the weekend of panel sessions, Ann will also launch a book created by Tasmanian writers and appear as the guest of honour at a literary high tea.

  • Friday 27 October 2023 - Garry Disher Day. Garry will offer a two-part masterclass on Australian crime fiction. Two hours in the morning, two hours in the afternoon.

  • On Saturday night it’s time to breakout the bubbleskirts and hair crimper: our murder mystery dinner this year, Death at the Blue Light Disco, has an 80s dress-up theme.

Join the creator of Vera, Shetland and Two Rivers, TAF2023 International Writer in Residence Ann Cleeves, on Thursday 26 October 2023 for two booklover events.

10 am, Book Launch of Murder You Wrote, An Interactive Mystery

  • In the morning, Ann Cleeves will launch a Tasmanian-led novel anthology of new and established writers: Murder You Wrote, An Interactive Mystery.

  • Commissioned by TARWF Director L.J.M. Owen, and supported by the Tasmanian Government, this Huon Valley-set, choose-your-own-investigation style mystery offers readers one story told collectively by 20+ writers.

  • The launch will be held at the Kermandie on 26TEN day, Tasmania’s adult literacy day. It is free to attend, by reservation, though of course we hope you purchase this perfect gift for crime and mystery lovers.

1 pm, Ann Cleeves Literary High Tea

  • In the afternoon, join us for a delicious Kermandie high tea to discuss Ann’s writing career and passion for supporting reading for wellness, in conversation with Barbie Robinson.

This is a Tasmanian Chapter of Sisters in Crime Australia event.

With more than four decades spent writing novels, scripts and non-fiction, Garry Disher brings a wealth of experience to his masterclasses.

Join the author of Australia’s much loved Wyatt, Peninsula Crimes (Inspector Challis) and Hirsch series for a two x two-hour sessions, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, to explore the tenets of writing Australian crime fiction. Hosted by Sarah E.C. Byrne.

9.50 am to 12 pm and 2 pm to 4 pm, followed by signing.

There will be a long lunch break. Book to have lunch at the hotel, BYO, or pop down the road to a local café or restaurant.

There are 30 seats in masterclass; plenty of additional seating is available at lunch for family and friends.

Join VANDA SYMON, our 2023 New Zealand Guest of Honour, for masterclasses and the TASSIE VICE panel program

 

The TASSIE VICE panel program, Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 October 2023, offers 10 sessions across two days, exploring the changing nature of Australian and international crime and mystery fiction since the 1980s.

Themes include Hill Street Blues and what we owe our tribe; Quincy M.E. and the representation of forensics; the A-Team takes on reality; and and what lies beyond For The Term of His Natural Life and Tasmanian convictgrim.

‘DEATH AT THE BLUE LIGHT DISCO’ MURDER MYSTERY PARTY

At TARWF, we love a good murder mystery party.

On Saturday night of the Festival Weekend, it’s Death at the Blue Light Disco, hosted by Flex and Herds. The mystery is based on a script from Ann Cleeves and adapted to Australia in the 80s by Sarah E.C. Byrne.

Break out those bubble skirts and the hair crimper, it will be a night of neon pink, pop rock and murder on the dancefloor.

A note on Festival Weekend accommodation

Any accommodation within a 45 min to 60 min radius from Port Huon will be suitable to drive back and forth. This includes berths at the Port Huon marina, and Hadley’s in Hobart.

Please note that there are minimal public transport and taxi options in the Huon Valley. Depending on your circumstances, you may need to hire a car.
