Festival Director’s Note
The opening ceremony begins with a stirring Welcome to Country by Julie Dunlop of the Melukerdee People of the South East Nation of Tasmania.
Terror Australis Readers and Writers Festival would like to acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the land on which our festival is held, the Melukerdee People of the South East Nation, and pay our respects to Elders past and present.
Julie speaks to truth. Truth in life, truth in history and truth about the treatment of indigenous peoples in Tasmania and across the world.
A fitting beginning to a panel program dedicated to exploring crime fiction written by women, which often examines the deeper, darker truths of human nature.
We then move to the opening of the Hall of Writers Book Fair presented by 26TEN, by Cr Bec Enders, Mayor of the Huon Valley. The Hall included over 40 authors and publishers in a one-day book extravaganza.
The TAF2019 Festival was then formally opened by Her Excellency Professor the Honourable Kate Warner, Governor of Tasmania.
I’m incredibly grateful to these advocates and leaders of our community for launching our in augural festival with such honour.
Dr L.J.M. Owen
