THE TAF FOR KIDS

CHILDREN’S WRITING COMPETITION

2019 THEME: FEMALE BUSHRANGERS

As part of our Children’s Program, alongside library and school visits in the last week of October, the Alley of Children’s Books in the Hall of Writers on Friday 1 November and the Children’s category in the Terror Australis Festival Art Awards, we’re offering a Children’s Writing Competition.

Ned Kelly. Captain Moonlight. Captain Thunderbolt.

Their names are synonymous with desperation, crime and violence.

But at Terror Australis Readers and Writers Festival we ask, Ned who?

Because Australia had buckjumping, cattle-duffing, escape artist women bushrangers too.

Capture the spirit of one of Australia’s tenacious, daring female bushrangers to win.

The Awards are open to all children up to the age of 16, regardless of home address, but please note that you must follow the process for entering a story. Children who live in the Huon Valley and surrounding areas are strongly encouraged to enter.

For Entry Form click here.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

We’ve provided high-level information on three women from Australian history who may provide inspiration for stories about female bushrangers. This information is a jumping-off point for teachers, parents and older students alike.

Jessie Hickman, the Wild Woman of Wollemi

Mary Ann Bugg, the notorious, craftier companion of Captain Thunderbolt

Tasmania’s own Mary Cockerill

 ANNOUNCEMENT OF PRIZE WINNERS

Everyone is invited to the TAF2019 Community Halloween Party with Children’s Book Costume Parade on Thursday 31 October 2019 at Cygnet Town Hall.

The party is open to all members of the Huon Valley and surrounding communities and will include food and drink stallholders (and a festival bar for parents and adults), a Children’s Book Costume Parade (with more prizes!) and the announcement of the Children’s Writing Competition Award winners.

Everyone, regardless of age, is encouraged to dress up as one of their favourite characters from a book and join in the fun!
